Vashana Eugene Mims was last heard from at about 9 p.m. on February 5, when he called a family member to check on his kids and announce that he was on his way home. But he never made it.
His family filed a missing person report with the Dallas police, telling officers that Mims, 36, had left the house with a friend on the afternoon in question to play basketball at the Larry Johnson Recreation Center. But, according to the friend, Mims had stayed outside and was gone by the time he returned.
Family members told police that Mims didn't have any physical or mental condition that would prevent him from returning home but that he did occasionally smoke PCP.
Mims remained missing for three weeks. A work crew found him yesterday morning in a wooded area along White Rock Creek just off Second Avenue, a block or so from the rec center. He had to be pulled from underneath a tree, which police believe crushed him. He's being sent for an autopsy just to be sure.
