Dallas Independent School District Superintendent Michael Hinojosa's been very clear about this one thing: He desperately wants the district to win The Broad Prize for Urban Education, given out annually "to honor urban school districts making the greatest overall improvement in student achievement while at the same time reducing achievement gaps across income and ethnic groups." But, look out, a Texas district today walked away with the $1 million Prize -- and it wasn't Dallas, not even close. Nope, a big mazel tov goes to ... Brownsville. From the release:
“Brownsville is the best kept secret in America,” said Eli Broad, founder of The Eli and Edythe Broad Foundation. “In the face of stark poverty, Brownsville is outpacing other large urban districts nationwide because it is smartly focusing all resources on directly supporting students and teachers. Other school districts can learn a great deal from Brownsville’s success.”As in: Superintendent Hector Gonzales, anyone? --Robert Wilonsky
