Based on the first day of Dallas Cowboys training camp, Tony Romo is ready. Ready to put last year's disappointing end behind him: "I'm not a holder anymore, thankfully." Ready to become the undisputed leader of America's Team: "I really think we can do something special this season. I need to be myself and play quarterback the right way for that to happen." Ready to get the ball early and often to Terrell Owens: The first play of camp was a reverse to T.O., and the highlight of Wednesday's afternoon workout at The Alamodome here in San Antonio was a 60-yard touchdown hookup between Romo and Owens.
And he's ready to head into camp and the 2007 regular season unfazed by an uncertain contract status: "My agent doesn’t like to hear this, but I love playing this game. If it’s for $100 or $1 million …whatever."
Romo, whose contract expires at the end of this season, will get a new deal sooner rather than later if he's as accurate as yesterday at The Alamodome. Between acknowledgment fist pumps to adoring fans, he completed passes of all trajectory all over the field. In other words, he looked more like a Pro Bowl quarterback than one with only 11 career starts.
"I’m getting paid to play a game. I’m lucky and I realize that," Romo said. "It’s not rocket science. I’m indifferent, honestly. If the team feels like paying me now I’m fine with it. If not, if they want to wait, that’s fine too. It won’t change my daily approach to helping this team win one bit. I don’t want the game to become about money.
