At 7:15 Sunday evening, 20-year-old Angel Nava was being led to the Lew Sterrett Justice Center infirmary by his two arresting officers, R. Chavez and M. Spence. The 20-year-old, right eye nearly swollen shut, had just been picked up on a warrant for harassing two Murphy cops. He began to struggle and hurl obscenities at the officers, as he'd been doing since he was arrested. The volley of insults, and the officers' response, was captured in a police report they filed later that night:
NAVA: "YOU MUTHAFUCKAS CAN'T DO SHIT TO ME, BITCH!" [Raises leg and delivers a powerful heel kick to Chavez' knee. The officer stumbles backward into another prisoner.] "NOW WHAT, BITCH? HOW DAT FEEL?"
SPENCE: [wrestling Nava to the ground] "Calm down, sir! Calm down!"
NAVA: "FUCK YOU, BITCH. YOU AIN'T SHIT WITHOUT THAT BADGE!"
SPENCE: "You are wrong, sir. Without this badge, I'm still human, which makes me somebody."
NAVA: "I'LL BE OUT IN THREE DAYS MUTHAFUCKA, SO IT'S NOTHING."
SPENCE: "I don't think you will be out in three days, sir."
NAVA: "BITCH, YES I WILL, AND I'M GOING TO GET OUT AND SHOOT YO' BITCH ASS YOU PIG."
SPENCE: "Excuse me, you are going to do what, sir?"
NAVA: "YOU HEARD ME, I'M GOING TO KILL YOUR BITCH ASS AND THEN FUCK YO' MOMMA, YOU PUSSY!"
SPENCE: "That's not nice."
Nor was Nava's response: "SO WHAT? FUCK YOU, I'LL SHOOT YO ASS."
Nava was ultimately lifted to his feet and booked into jail without further incident. He faces the original harassment charges, plus one charge of assaulting a public servant and one of retaliation.
Spence and Chavez meanwhile, taken aback by the utter lack of respect for their dignity as human beings, retreated to a quiet room to sip chamomile tea and talk about their feelings. [Disclaimer: That last part didn't actually happen, but the rest is in the police report.]
