No. 5: Mini Ice Cream Sandwiches at Square Burger

Square Burger in historic downtown McKinney has been in business only a few months but is already packing the crowds into its smallish space on the square (thus the name). Customers come for the variety of fancy burgers, such as the lamb burger with tzatziki sauce and feta cheese on pita bread, a rich, gooey, sumptuous red meat feast for the senses that stacks up against any burger in Dallas. As much as we'd like to write about this gloriously messy festival of extra-napkin goodness, our the editors of City of Ate, Dick Dastardly and Muttley, have decreed that enough has been written about burgers in this series.

Luckily, there are a few more dishes worthy of attention at Square Burger, most notably the mini ice cream sandwiches. One order gets the lucky diner three ice cream cookie creations about the size of Double Stuf Oreos, and all three are excellent. As good as the Peanut Butter and Jelly sandwich and the chocolate-cookie vanilla ice cream concoctions are, they were easily outshone by the snickerdoodle cookie filled with fresh strawberry ice cream. Rich, and yet oh so light, these ice cream cookies are the perfect finish to an excellent meal, provided that you've selected the drippy, swarthy, feisty goodness of the incredible lamb burger as your main course. But, sorry, we can't tell you about that.
