Hot on the heels of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month comes Movember, a month-long event dedicated to raising awareness about prostate cancer. Officially, by presidential order, September 2013 was National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, but Movember is a tradition that comes to us from Australia, where their November is our September, or some such nonsense.
Movember works thusly: Men who agree to participate start off November clean-shaven and grow mustaches throughout the month, collecting donations from friends and family that go to cancer research, awareness programs and mental health outreach. The mustaches themselves serve as "conversation starters." (Sample conversation: "What the hell is that on your face?" "Not prostate cancer.") Movember has attracted celebrities as notable as Snoop Lion, Morgan Spurlock and something called Foster the People.

Tonight, Goodfriend is hosting a kickoff event open to anyone who wants to join their Movember team. Arrive with some scruff and the Boardroom men's salon will offer straight razor shaves so everyone can start the month off with the smoothest upper lip possible. Austin-based rockabilly band Wyldwood Four will also be there.
Goodfriend is also hosting parties throughout the month, with Nashville-based bluegrass band HillBilly Casino on the 27th and rock and blues band Foxtrot Uniform from Fort Worth on the 30th. The most impressive mustaches will win prizes. Breckenridge Brewery will also be releasing special beers for Movember, including 471 Cherry PiePa, which is a cherry and cinnamon beer and not, as we were hoping, a prostate-themed brew. But it sounds delicious.
