I know better than to bitch about my job; there are worse ways to make a living than getting paid to eat and write about it. But there are times when I'm feeling a little weighed down. I've eaten so many burgers, Reubens, and Cuban sandwiches looking for Dallas' finest specimens. Pork belly is featured everywhere, and Dallas is a town that loves to deep-fry things and cover them with cheese.
So while taking a first look at SWIG, the self-labeled speakeasy and beer garden on Henderson Avenue, I did something I really ought to do a bit more of -- I ordered a salad. Of course, leave it to me to fuck up healthy. I went for the Cobb, loaded with egg, bacon and blue cheese dressing.
Turns out SWIG's version of the dressed greens coronary isn't that heavy. They leverage large chunks of good, fresh blue cheese in a dressing they apply lightly. The bacon was sprinkled with caution, and the greens were fresh and springy. It was like eating a mixture of vitamins and antioxidants that I actually enjoyed.
If healthy was really my goal I probably should have ordered the arugula salad dressed simply in a lemon vinaigrette and topped with grilled chicken, but I'd already started with the fried mushrooms and there was no turning back. Who am I kidding? Dallas is a cheese and bacon kind of town.
