  • Today In Music News: Jay-Z Goes Indie, Arctic Monkeys Love Sabbath, Massive Attack Plans Tour

Your daily dose of national music news for Friday, May 22, 2009... Jay-Z bought out his Def Jam contract for a reported $5 million. Since he's got the spare cash layin' around: Jay, I could use some cash... The Arctic Monkeys used Black Sabbath as inspiration for its new album. Let's hope a deal with the devil wasn't part of the deal. Massive Attack is planning a "huge" world tour behind the release of their upcoming album.

  • ACL '09: The Rain's Stopped (For Now) As Crowds Wait For Pearl Jam--And Maybe The Toadies?

The early outlook here on the Day Three of the 2009 Austin City Limits Music Festival isn't too bad. The sun has peeked out from behind the clouds here and there, and, for the time being, the rain has held off. Forecasts appear to indicate more rain as the day continues, though, and, surely, that will only add the the muddy mess that Zilker Park's grounds have become--a true shame, too, since everyone was raving about the fresh, gold course-like grass on Friday's beautiful afternoon. • Gig Alerts: The Craziest Monday Night We've Seen Around Here In Some Time...

In an odd quirk of scheduling, four major national acts bless our area's venues, offering up an incredibly hectic start to the music week begins this evening. This time around, White's cohorts in crime include Alison Mosshart (of The Kills and Discount), Dean Fertita (of Queens

  • ACL '09: The Toadies Come From The Water

Photos by Patrick MichelsSurely, it was with their tongues planted firmly in their cheeks that the members of the Toadies opened their 4 p.m. set at the festival's main stage on Sunday with longtime Rubberneck favorite "I Come From The Water."But, a funny thing about the Toadies' set on Sunday afternoon: For the first time since Friday evening, audiences were treated to--get this--sunshine at Zilker Park. And with the light pouring down onto the band and its massive audience on Sunday, the To

  • Last Night: The Dead Weather at House of Blues

The Dead WeatherHouse of BluesOctober 5, 2009Better Than: Sunny Day Real Estate, Rob Thomas, and Arctic Monkeys combined. Yeah, I said it.The Dead WeatherAs far as rock 'n' roll supergroups are concerned, there are two main varieties: those comprised of members of formerly great bands, reeking of late career desperation (see: Chickenfoot) and those comprised of rock icons at the top of their game (see: Cream). Luckily for fans at the House of Blues last night, The Dead Weather proved to be th

  • Today In Music News: Jay-Z Digs The Ting Tings, There Are Only Two Good Bands Left in The UK And Ladytron Readies a "Best Of"

Your daily dose of national music news for Thursday, November 11, 2009...At least Jay-Z has good, cross-genre taste when it comes to picking music for his new label: He's signed the Ting Tings to Roc Nation.Looks like there are only two great bands left in the UK: Kasabian and The Arctic Monkeys.  Of course, it was Kasabian's guitarist who said that.Already time for a Ladytron "Best Of?" I guess that's what happens when UK bands sneak up on you after several years together.
