Steal from Channel 8's old Let Me Speak To the Manager and The Ticket's old Ask the Hard Line and what do you get? A Tuesday variably recurring time-waster featuring a bunch of people asking questions and one poor schmuck doing all the answering. Q: Who do you consider the most knowledgeable sports personalities in town?    A: Hmm. I think Randy Galloway probably has the best personal info on players, coaches and owners. I think Norm Hitzges has the best statistical perspecti

  • Festival News from Austin City Limits: Bands Wanted

The lineup for this year's Austin City Limits Music Festival is being set and worthy bands are being encouraged to sign up for something called The Sound and The Jury competition. Here's the scoop that got sent to me via email this morning: "Round One is live now and bands can upload their music at http://delllounge.com/soundandthejury/ to enter the competition. To stay in the game, bands must generate enough votes to land them in the Top 100 by Aug. 28. From there, industry judges will narrow

Doesn't he look like he's having fun, fun, fun?Along with Les Savy Fav, Atlas Sound, GZA and (deep breath) The Jesus Lizard, The Fun Fun Fun Fest November 7 and 8 in Austin will include one local boy-turned-Austinite: former Ghosthustler Alan Palomo's second-newest project, VEGA.Though the former Dentron dweller isn't yet listed on the festival's "lineup leaks" page, today's missive to the media included VEGA among the announced acts, along with Yeasayer, Kid Sister and DRI. • Some Band From Austin Beats Out Dentonites Vying For Final ACL Spot. Big Shocker.

Erin Austin and Andrew Tinker's Band headed down to Austin last night. For the past few weeks, we've been following the efforts of various DFW area artists trying to scam their way into the final slot at this weekend's Austin City Limits Music Festival via the annual competition called The Sound and The Jury. And, last night at Antone's in Austin, the competition came to its head in a live battle of the bands. But, even with a bus-full of Dentonites, neither of the Denton-based artists who'd m

  • ACL '09: Weather Rains Reigns Over Day Two.

All photos by Patrick Michels In short, the weather made for a rather miserable day on Day Two of the 2009 Austin City Limits Music Festival.Gray skies hovered from the day's start--and it didn't take long for the clouds to unleashed their fury. Shortly after 2:30 p.m., the day's first pours hammered down upon crowds of stubborn fans, who were unwilling to let mother nature interrupt their Saturday plans. For some, it was cause for celebration--the City of Austin, which has supposedly

  • ACL '09: The Rain's Stopped (For Now) As Crowds Wait For Pearl Jam--And Maybe The Toadies?

The early outlook here on the Day Three of the 2009 Austin City Limits Music Festival isn't too bad. The sun has peeked out from behind the clouds here and there, and, for the time being, the rain has held off. Forecasts appear to indicate more rain as the day continues, though, and, surely, that will only add the the muddy mess that Zilker Park's grounds have become--a true shame, too, since everyone was raving about the fresh, gold course-like grass on Friday's beautiful afternoon. • ACL '09: Pearl Jam Regains Its Rightful Place Atop The Rock World

Photos by Patrick MichelsIt had been 15 years--according, at least, to one of Eddie Vedder's asides during the closing set of this weekend's Austin City Limits Music Festival--since Pearl jam had played what he called "The Live Music Capital of the Nation." And, as such, Vedder promised the mud-covered audiences at Zilker Park, Pearl Jam would not disappoint: "I'm not going home, personally, until I'm covered in dirt," he announced, unsurprisingly eliciting a massive roar from the crowd. And

  • Sarah Jaffe, Neon Indian Earn Rolling Stone Blog Mentions For ACL Performances

OK, so, admittedly, we're a little behind on this note (been busy with our own coverage, sorry), but it still bears mentioning: Both Sarah Jaffe and Neon Indian found themselves earning positive reviews over the weekend as part of Rolling Stone's blog coverage of the Austin City Limits Music Festival--in the same wrap-up of Saturday's shows, no less. In short: Jaffe's vocals are "gentle" and determined, with music that serves as a "perfect complement"; Neon Indian, meanwhile, showcases just a
