  • Gettin' Jiggy with Holiday Giving at Will Smith's Dallas Premiere

Patrick Michels Will Smith pulls off the jersey and tie almost as heroically as Mayor Tom Leppert. Will Smith is all about good deeds these days, so if you wanted to catch the Dallas premiere of his new feel-good thriller Seven Pounds, you had to come with cans. Which was was cool with hundreds of fans, who began lining up outside the Cinemark 17 theaters before noon Tuesday, toting canned food donations for the North Texas Food Bank. The Fresh Prince (Big Willie, if you prefer) took to the s

  • Pulp Charity: Holiday Food Drive Horror Stories

Holiday giving is all around us now. If you're not already the generous type, you're being guilted into it by a bell-ringing Santa, or Will Smith, or even Wal-Mart.If you think you can get away with tossing another can of creamed spinach into the bin -- the one in your kitchen cabinet, back where you found the dusty bamboo shoots last year -- well, you're right. But that doesn't mean you should feel good about it.Talk to the people who actually hand out the food, and it'll take a lot more to imp

  • Not Taking The Cake

Patrick MichelsThe 33 KDAF's Rebecca Miller dresses up her cake.In a scandal very much like the one where French and Russian figure skating judges fixed Olympics results, I was robbed this morning of a cake decorating crown that was--by at least one account--rightfully mine. But first, the important stuff: The annual "cake-off"--in which the likes of Robbie Owens and Teresa Frosini of CBS 11 news, meteorologist Rebecca Miller from channel 33 and a lowly Observer food writer decorate cakes--draws

  • In Dallas, a Rise in Homelessness and Hunger Due to "Bleak" Economy

This morning, outside a rescue mission in Miami, the U.S. Conference of Mayors released a study concerning homelessness and hunger in 25 major cities, with Dallas among those participating in the survey. The section dealing specifically with the city can be found on Page 30 of the 85-page report, but according to the study, which says that 21.1 percent of Dallas residents live below the poverty line, "Dallas has experienced a 14 percent increase in people experiencing homelessness" in the last y

  • Hash Over: Drink Like A Millionaire, Eat Heart-Healthy, And More

Golden Spirits has come up with an idea so perfectly suited to the artificial luxury embodied by Dallas ultra-lounges that you'd think the Madison, Wisconsin distillery was based here. Well, to use the old bumper-sticker phrase, Million Vodka wasn't born here, but it got here as fast as it could. Million Vodka [music warning] is a self-described "ultra premium" hand-crafted, triple-filtered, small-batch vodka with a suggested retail price of $29.99. But it's so much more than just a vodka. • The New Faces of Hunger in North Texas

When the U.S. Department of Agriculture released a report earlier this week that placed Texas second only to Mississippi when it comes to the swelling ranks of hungry residents, Jan Pruitt wasn't surprised. After all, the president and CEO of the North Texas Food Bank had just released her own data on the growing need of North Texas families as part of a major food drive heading into the holidays. "I wasn't surprised based on what this last year has looked like for us," she tells Unfair Park,
