  • Giveaway: Two Pairs Of Tickets For MC Frontalot Saturday At The Double-Wide

The popularity of nerdcore, a subgenre of hip-hop so steeped in irony that you can practically see the air quotes framing the stage, is a phenomenon I'll never understand. But for those who are into white dudes rapping about video games or whatever, Saturday night at the Double-Wide is practically Woodstock, as nerdcore titans MC Frontalot, MC Lars, YT Cracker and Fort Worth's Rivercrest Yacht Club will all perform. Double-Wide booking agent and DOMA-winning music advocate Chelsea Callahan has o

  • The Best 15 Venues In DFW For Your Up-And-Coming Band? Epic Fail.

Today, over at MadeLoud.com--a site that claims to "serve the bands", but probably not in a sexual way, I'm guessing--someone's decided that, sure, the bands in DFWd could use a little help in trying to figure out where to play around town.OK. We're fine with that. And the fact that it names 15 venues in total (six in Dallas, seven in Denton and two in Fort Worth). All that's golden.Till, of course, you look at the lists. No Cavern in Dallas? No Lounge? No Lola's in Fort Worth? No 8.0's, either?

The 2011 Super Bowl will be played at Jerryworld, of course, but the AFC and NFC champs won't be staying in Arlington or Dallas. Nope -- come February 2011, the AFC champs will stay at the Omni Fort Worth, which is pictured at right and scheduled to open this month, while the NFC title-holders in '11 will stay in the Omni Mandalay Hotel in Las Colinas. And why the Fort Worth site?Well, that Omni is adjacent to the Fort Worth Convention Center, for starters, and the convention center may wind up

Speaking of Fort Worth, the Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame inducted its class of 2009 last night with a wingding on E. Said Jones, a St. Mark's grad, "This is the first time in all my long years of award-winning that I wish my granddad could be here." As it turns out, Jones was not inducted for his work as the Barnett Shale's drillmaster or as a coffee-drink pitchm

Patrick MichelsFort Worth-based filmmaker Tom Huckabee's first feature was a post-apocalyptic William S. Burroughs adaptation, in which a 19-year-old Bill Paxton gets a brainwashing and a sex change from militant feminists. For his second feature now, 26 years later, Huckabee is tackling slightly milder themes, like family ties and caring for the elderly. In Carried Away, which has been filming around Dallas and Fort Worth over the past few weeks, a guy liberates his senile grandmother from her n

Salim NourallahYep. An international songwriting competition quite cleverly named the International Songwriting Competition, in fact. Anyway, as the header implies, six locals made the cut to get a "finalist" nod from the ISC. Who? For what songs? In what categories? And, just for good measure, where are these people from? Funny you should ask, as that's exactly the information I happen to have on this front:AAA: "1978" by Salim Nourallah from Dallas, TXDance/Electronica: "This Is A Test" by Rob

Cafe PressVia StreetsBlog New York City, we find this morning on Bike Friendly Oak Cliff an interview with Don Koski, the man charged with making Fort Worth cyclist-friendly -- got that? Good. What BFOC really wants to know, of course, is what Dallas can learn from Fort Worth's plans. To which Koski replies, in short: Dunno.Dallas will obviously be following closely the changes that Fort Worth adopts due to the similarities we share in density and temperature. Taurian FontenetteSo, yes, Jay Bowdy and I have made peace. If you haven't been playing along this morning, the owner of the North Texas Fresh -- that'd be Fort Worth's new entry into the American Basketball Association -- called me out this morning for ugh-ing the name of the franchise. For a while there, it appeared as if this morning could be something of a judgment day for Fort Worth's Ridglea Theater. Today, after all, was the day that the venue was set to face foreclosure, after the loan that the owners had received from a Dallas lender last year when facing foreclosure had defaulted. But, today, via the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, comes the news that the venue has again fought off foreclosure, at least for the time being, this time by filing for bankruptcy. In its Chapter

This past weekend was a big one for Fort Worth's The Burning Hotels. On Friday, Vanessa Hudgens-driven battle of the bands flick, Bandslam, in which The Burning Hotels' members make an appearance as, well, themselves, debuted in theaters. And though the film did quite poorly at the box office--pulling in a pretty weak $2.3 million and failing to crack the weekend's top ten earners--that's still quite the coup for the rock outfit. Especially, since, on Friday night, the band played something of

Fort Worth's The Burning Hotels are on a serious roll of late, what with their Bandslam performance and their song appearing on the movie soundtrack and all that. And now come the perks. As the song "Stuck in the Middle" appears on the soundtrack, in the movie, and on the band's debut EP, the song is a Bravery-esque dance-rock jam that's pretty catchy in its own right. But as NYC/LA/SF-based remix producer Baron Von Luxxury re-imagines it, though, it's a VEGA-esque nu-disco dance jam. Same goes

Tomorrow night at the Longhorn Saloon in Fort Worth, Memphis alt-country favorites Lucero stop on in for a performance as part of its tour in support of the recently released album, 1372 Overton Park.
