  • Homes for the Holiday

By week's end, there should be nine new houses in Greenleaf Village II, near the original 5-year-old West Dallas development at Hampton Road and I-30. As we noted back in July, this is the week Whirlpool Corporation and Dallas Area Habitat for Humanity -- and folks who've come to Dallas from all over the country, hammers in hand -- begin construction on those new abodes for low-income residents, as part of Whirlpool's Building Blocks Annual Community Build; previous recipients of new Habitat

  • In West Dallas, Habitat for Humanity is Cranking and "Crunkin'" It Out

Patrick Michels Tammy Blackmon in front of her new home. Earlier this week, we told you about Habitat for Humanity's latest build project in West Dallas off Westmoreland Road. And, already, nine new homes are a couple days away from being ready for move-in. Unfair Park stopped by yesterday and found 250 volunteers from all over the country scrambling around the walls and rooftops. All nine houses were being outfitted with siding and bricks, with the build scheduled to wrap on Friday afternoon

  • In West Dallas, Finding MMDs

On Wednesday, as you're no doubt aware by now, the Dallas City Council voted to create three municipal management districts, or MMDs. They're the first in Dallas, though Houston is often invoked as proof that MMDs do wonders for development. Which is no surprise, as they're made for development -- or, more specifically, developers, who would be allowed to create self-governed districts in which they could issue public debt and then levy taxes, assessments and other fees to pay down that debt. Aubrey Edwards Moth FightWell, for all the folks who were complaining that NX35 featured too many local acts, you can't really complain about tonight. There's Monotonix (Tel Aviv, Israel), Casiotone for the Painfully Alone (Chicago), Beep Beep (Omaha), Sybris (Chicago), Black Gold (Brooklyn), Sugar & Gold (San Francisco) and The Botticellis (San Francisco) to name a few--but one of the bands that I'm most excited about hail from a little closer to home: Austin's Moth Fight. • In West Dallas, Bulldozers Clear the Way for New Homes and New Residents

Alexa SchirtzingerClaudia Hernández didn't know the house across the street from her home would become bulldozer fodder until a few minutes before it happened Saturday afternoon."We saw people looking at the property [over the past few weeks]," Hernández said. "But we had no idea they'd do this!"Not that she's upset. For years, the eyesore of a duplex at the corner of Pueblo and Puget Streets in West Dallas has been a problem for neighbors and police alike. Hernández, whose family has lived i

  • For a Second Year, the Sue Pope Fund Will Dole Out Grants to Folks Who Can Clear the Air

Katy HubenerIn a small, bright room at the Center for Community Cooperation this morning, Katy Hubener, the grant coordinator for the Sue Pope Fund, officially announced $1 million available in funding for new clean air projects in North Texas. The fund was established in 2005 in honor of Sue Pope, a Midlothian rancher known for her role in the decades-long fight against air pollution emanating from TXI's cement plant-cum-hazardous waste incinerator. The story is a long and dramatic one (we told

  • Turns Out Jury in City Hall Corruption Trial Isn't the Only Ones Learning About CHDOs

It's good to know CHDOs are doing some good 'cause the City Hall corruption trial is teaching us that they're naughty.Among the dozens of acronyms we've grown accustomed to hearing throughout the City Hall corruption trial is CHDO -- Community Housing Development Organization -- which is why yesterday afternoon's briefing to the city council's Housing Committee titled "Impact of CHDOs in the City of Dallas" caught our eye. To our disappointment, the trial wasn't discussed, although witness Jer
