  • Distant Gig Alert: Dinosaur Jr. and Built to Spill at the Granada Theater on October 22

We've gone a few weeks now without our (once) weekly Show Announcements posting about, go figure, upcoming shows that get announced each week. Sorry for the lapse there, folks--it'll make its way back soon enough, promise. In the meantime, let me use this post as an excuse to spread the word that, on Thursday, October 22, at the Granada Theater, Built to Spill and Dinosaur Jr. will be rolling through town for a show for which the theater has yet to start selling tickets. Which is awesome because

  • Does Amarillo Have Better Radio Than Dallas?

Making my way back to Big D after a week spent camping in Utah and Arizona, I stumbled upon KWTS 91.1 FM out of Amarillo. Broadcasting from the West Texas A&M University campus, this little oasis of deep indie rock kept me locked in until the signal finally diminished just outside of Wichita Falls. For those couple of hours, though, and on a Sunday afternoon, no less, my family and I were serenaded by the likes of Los Camesinos!, The Ting Tings, Benjy Ferree, Vetiver, Mates of State, Woodpig

  • Today In Music News: Bright Eyes Retires, Sufjan Gets His Movie On and RZA Get Philosophical

Your daily dose of national music news for Thursday, July 23, 2009... Conor Oberst is allegedly retiring his Bright Eyes moniker. I would like to suggest a new name: George Taylor. Sufjan Stevens is set to release a CD/DVD set for his movie The BQE. No word yet on a set of wings coming with the combo set. RZA is set to release his second book The Tao of The Wu.  It covers philosophy and spirituality and possibly how to talk with marbles in you mouth.

It's Friday! Party time! Excellent! After Tuesday's festivities, it almost feels redundant to have an actual weekend. But there are plenty of musical reasons not to waste the weekend catching up on all the things that hangover kept you from finishing on Wednesday. As for stuff going on Friday, we've already told you about Kixpo (which kicks off [sorry!] with a pre-party Friday before the Saturday event and afterparty), Magnolia Electric Co. at Rubber Gloves in Denton, Jack's Mannequin at St

  • Giveaway: Five Pairs Of Tickets To Friday Night's Broken Social Scene Show

Remember all that drama back in late January/early February when Broken Social Scene had to cancel its House of Blues gig because band founder Kevin Drew fell ill? Dallas fans took to Broken Social Scene's web site to spit some hate at the band for canceling, and, in turn, the band fired back, with BSS' Brendan Canning telling Austin Town Hall that "anyone who wrote anything negative can seriously go fuck themselves. Those are obviously just ill informed little dweebs with too much time on th

  • Bonus MP3: Kill The Dance Floor -- "Stare"

Last year, brothers Mick and Raul Espinoza were plying their new wave craft under the moniker Mahteo. They even recorded a pretty cool debut album, The NuWave Republic. Although that record mined the classic '80s influences of Joy Division and The Cure a little too blatantly, it nevertheless had its moments--enough so, at least, that the future of the band looked pretty bright in my eyes. Yet, less than a month later, the band's named was changed to Kill the Dance Floor and the Espinozas hire

This is one of the biggest music weekends in recent memory, and it seems like there's something for everyone regardless of budget or musical taste. First up is the Bob Dylan/Willie Nelson/Johnny Cougar show at Quiktrip Park in Grand Prairie. There are still tickets available, according to the Airhogs Web site. Doors open, like, now. Brooklyn's The Wiyos open at 5:30 p.m., followed by Willie at 6:10, that "Jack and Diane" asshole at 7:35 and The Bob Dylan Band headlining at 9:10. Also tonight,

And, yeah, some Dallas fans even turned bitter and spiteful, resorting to posting nasty remarks on message boards, local blogs and even on BSS's own website

  • Norah Jones Announces A November Release For Her Next Album

According to a press release that apparently went out to every media outlet in the world today, Dallas' own Norah Jones has a new album coming out in November--her fourth overall, and first in two years. After the jump, the press release in full, since it features some Jones quotes on the new, as-yet-untitled release, as well as updates on what she's been up to in the past two years. No mention of El Madmo, though, oddly enough. Oh well.Anyway, before you jump, here's something of note: Among

Dia de los Toadies at Rough Creek Ranch in Glen Rose Saturday, August 29The Toadies playing "Possum Kingdom" at Possum Kingdom is almost too much for my brain to handle, so it's probably best the second annual Dia de los Toadies headed away from that lake for this year's fest. No Toadies set is complete, though, without the crowd shouting along to the band's classic "Possum Kingdom"--and neither disappoints here.

  • Gig Alert: Fruit Bats' Free In-Store Performance At Good Records

In this week's dead tree version of DC9, Darryl Smyers checked in with Fruit Bats leader Eric Johnson about a number of things, but mostly about how his own band differs from the other bands he plays in, a list that includes Vetiver and The Shins. And Johnson's thoughts on the matter?"What I do in Fruit Bats certainly doesn't sound like The Shins, Part II," Johnson says. "But I know that there's simply no way around people thinking of Fruit Bats as a Shins side project. So far, surprisingly,

Yesterday, the folks at You and Yours Productions--the same people who've brought you the two latest videos from The Burning Hotels--released the above footage of Telegraph Canyon performing at Bass Hall, opening for the Old 97's, from a few weeks back. It was a special night--and the clip, which boasts multiple angles and four songs of Telegraph Canyon's performance ("Old Dark Hymns," "All The Good News," "Spinning Wheels" and "Shake Your Fist"), only reinforces as much. • ACL '09: Devotchka Warms Attendees With Its Wordly Charms

All photos by Patrick MichelsThough Nick Urata, front man for Denver-based gypsy folk-rock outfit Devotchka, joked that the only reason his band had a draw worth mentioning during its set at ACL's indoor Wildflower stage was because of the rain, consider his words simply a matter of humility. Because, for the bulk of Devotchka's set, aside from a spattering of showers at its early evening start, the rain actually paused for the band's performance. No matter--the crowds still jammed the

The early outlook here on the Day Three of the 2009 Austin City Limits Music Festival isn't too bad. The sun has peeked out from behind the clouds here and there, and, for the time being, the rain has held off. Forecasts appear to indicate more rain as the day continues, though, and, surely, that will only add the the muddy mess that Zilker Park's grounds have become--a true shame, too, since everyone was raving about the fresh, gold course-like grass on Friday's beautiful afternoon. I know, I know. You've had it with daily St. Vincent and Neon Indian updates. All that has to happen now is for St. Vincent to cover "Ice Cream Paint Job" and have Alan Palomo remix it, at which point DC9 would be thrown into a Boolean loop from which it would never emerge.
