  • Houston, We Have a ... Three-Game Winning Streak?

5-7 is looking pretty good right about now, huh? When you get a break from resurrecting the Cowboys, take a minute to not bury the Mavericks either. On the brink of a 2-8 start Monday night, the Mavericks last night beat the Rockets in Houston for their third consecutive victory. Even better: Tomorrow night they’ll get their first home win of the season and improve to 6-7 as the Memphis Grizzlies slink into AAC. Trailing the Knicks 112-105 with 2:28 remaining on Monday, things lo

UPDATE: Our Village Voice sister paper in Palm Beach will be live blogging from the game tonight. Pop Quiz: A) I'm jazzed about tonight's BCS National Championship Game, pitting the two best teams in college football this season. B) I'm mildy interested, even though I think Southern Cal, Texas and Utah are just as deserving of this year's title. C) I always root for the Big 12. D) I always root against Oklahoma. E) Dudn't matter. F) I doubt if Pacman Jones could play for either t

  • Your 2009 Dallas Mavericks: Mediocre? Morose? Magical?

In between the few highlights of an entirely underwhelming college football championship game between what looked like two very average quarterbacks, I sneaked some peeks last night at your Dallas Mavericks. What'd I see? Another win, pushing their record to an impressive 22-13. Another unimpressive performance, this time barely outlasting the lowly New York Knicks 99-94 in what was a one-point game in the final minute. Not exactly sure what to make of these Mavs.

  • The Top 10 Best Current Rivalries in Sports

Tonight's the next chapter in one of sports' best rivalries. That's right, I said best.To be a true sports rivalry - more than just a plethora of games between teams in close proximity (see Chicago Cubs vs. St. Louis Cardinals) - the meetings between opponents must: *Take place at an advanced level, with championships on the line. *Feature sustained excellence by both teams over a period of time. *Include some form of contentiousness, be it physical alternations or trash-talking

  • Mars Blackmon's in Town. For AFI? Nope.

A Friend of Unfair Park noticed this note at the end of ESPN.com's recap of last night's Mavs-Warriors recap:Movie director Spike Lee, a noted Knicks fan, sat courtside with Mavs owner Mark Cuban. Lee is in town for a film festival. Can only think of one, but so far no confirmation from AFI Dallas folks. Still, it would make sense: Lee, after all, did direct AFI Dallas Star Award recipient Adrien Brody exactly 10 years ago in Summer of Sam. And Brody will be among those attending tonight's NorthP

  • NBA Free Agency Commences in 3 ... 2 ... 1 ...

Love him or not, gotta have him back. Right? So, the Mavs made a big deal yet? Well, GM Donnie Nelson promised a "very active summer," so let's hop to it. Actually, though NBA free agency is just hatching, Dallas may be already making progress. That is, if you consider re-signing Jason Kidd progress. Kidd may not be the Mavs' most important signing this off-season, but he's by far their most important re-signing. If Kidd walks - without compensation - I'm crowing about the disastrous Devin
