  • Echoes And Reverberations: Hitchhiking Along Post-Industrial Boulevard

Noise is not for everybody. Some people hear a jackhammer on the street corner and promptly cover their ears; others hear a subsonic melody and random harmonic movement in the staccato repetition of mechanized machinery. “Industrial music” is the umbrella term used to describe artists who eschew acoustic or organic instrumentation for equipment like samplers, sequencers, and the odd chunk of found metal. Vocals aren’t so much sung as spoken or bleated repeatedly as if coming from a mi

But I'll be damned if I didn't find myself singing in the shower this morning. Granted it was an apropos Nine Inch Nails diddy - don't start calling me Mr. Sunshine just yet - but for me it was a relatively happy, frolicking episode nonetheless. See, usually this time of year I'm knee-deep in holiday postpartum depression. You kn

  • Today in Music News: NIN Shares Video, Zeppelin Ain't Performing, Phish Sets A Tour, and Dre Gets Leaked

Your daily dose of national music news for Friday, January 9, 2009... If you have a lot of bandwidth and extra time on your hands you can download HD footage for Nine Inch Nails shows and make your own concert video! I should've joined the high school A.V. Club when I had the chance... I guess those of us not around in the '70s (or able to fly to London to see the reunion show) will never be able to see Led Zeppelin in concert. You can blame it all on Robert Plant. Thanks, Bob! Your daily dose of national music news for Tuesday, February 17, 2009... Metallica is now embracing digital music... as long as "digital music" doesn't mean "illegal downloads". The band is releasing its entire music catalogue digitally via iTunes on March 31 and then everywhere else on April 28.  Trent Reznor may be pulling the plug on Nine Inch Nails' future touring. He posted a note on the NIN website stating that his band will tour with Jane's Addiction th

Your daily dose of national music news for Monday, March 23, 2009...Eminem and Flea are among the presenters for this years Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductees. Em will induct Run-DMC; Flea will induct Metallica. It's funny how 50 Cent likes to take jabs at easy targets like Rick Ross, but, when it comes to standing up for himself with Lil Wayne, Mr. Cent seems to just take it all in stride. Weezy took another lyrical jab at 50 on a leaked song the surfaced this past Friday. Let's see if Mr. Cen

  • Blogaroo '09: At Least The Comics Are Keeping Things Light...

As of Friday at noonish, nothing at the 2009 Bonnaroo Music and Arts Festival has happened the way I've expected it to. Or the way I've thought it should've gone. Or the way Triumph the Insult Comic Dog thought it would either, for that matter. No surprise that there are lines for everything, but they are incredibly long. An hour and a half to pick up tickets at the will call location, which was manned by a single person handling every writer, photographer, videographer and blogger with the gall

  • Gig Alert: VNV Nation and War Tapes at the Granada Tonight

VNV NationListening to VNV Nation is reminiscent of listening to alternative music when it was a viable and legitimate form of music. The band isn't something you're going to hear on a traditional modern rock radio station; combining elements of electronica, dance music and a little bit of industrial for good measure, VNV Nation is the sound for kids who missed out on Nine Inch Nails in the early '90s. And the dour sound of the vocals actually meshes quite well with the upbeat electronic sound.

  • Because I'm Better Than Bitter, 20 Things I Love

I love sports and stuff and, oh yeah, freaky things like, say, baby heads in glass vases. No, no, no. You got me all wrong. Am I skeptical? Cynical? Inquisitive? Smart-assy? Guilty. But bitter? Hardly. I consider myself more tell-it-like-it-is realistic rather than jump-off-the-high-five negative. I don't think the Rangers will make the playoffs. I think Josh Hamilton should've come clean before he was caught. And I absolutely despise squirrels. But, honestly, I'm general

  • A Couple New DJ Mixtapes Worth Checking Out...

A couple of area DJs released some impressive mixtapes this week--good listening, I'd say, especially as you count down the minutes until, your weekend officially gets started. First up, check out the latest from Wanz Dover, aka Blixaboy, called, quite simply enough, "Summer Bass Mix." Like most Blixaboy tapes, it's a little heavy on his own material--seven of the 15 tracks, in this case--but, on this tape, that's actually OK. Mostly because it fits quite well on this impressive, almost ether

  • Dallas Company Looks To Apps to Replace CDs, MP3s

According to this press release, Dallas-based company PlayApp is looking to replace the current process of publishing music in compact disc and mp3 form with doing so via individual program applications--y'know, as in, "There's an app for that." The idea? As opposed to even mp3s, the music applications the company offers are both "easier to use, and collectible." Says John Willsey, the man behind the company: "Each [app] is unique, unlike any other. We prefer to get in direct contact with

  • Music and the Munchies: A Day of Mourning

I attempt to lift my pen peck my keyboard today with a heavy heart, and an empty stomach. For, alas, two staples of my life's diet are no more. R.I.P., NIN. And Luby's, 4:45 p.m. dinners will never taste the same. Trent Reznor, one of the most chaotic, rhythmic, unique and dark noisemakers of a generation, disbanded Nine Inch Nails last month. Just as I was emerging from that coma, an even worse diagnosis: Marriage. The freakiest of front men is selling his soul to some chick na

  • The 10 Musical Acts I'd See If I Was on Death Row

Basia - Because it is, after all, MY list.Last Thursday I saw a band called MuteMath at The Palladium. Very decent, but in the big picture not quite funky enough or not nearly hard enough for my musical lusting. While there I was thinking - ya know, like you do - whether I'd like to see them if I was on Death Row. Kinda like a last meal, only a last concert. Inmate No. 12345678910, this is the last music you will ever hear. You get 10 acts. Place your order ... 10. Linkin Par
