  • Best in Dallas Music, 2008: The Podcast

For whatever reason, we were feeling like a real team last week--so much so that we gathered up most of the music writing crew here at the Observer and packed everyone into my spacious fake college dorm room office to talk about our favorite local releases of the year (and to take very unlively pictures, it seems...). Anyway, someone suggested we record it. For posterity, I guess. So we did.The result: Our debut DC9 at Night podcast, in which we discuss, among other things, Rhett Miller's hatred

  • From The Archives: A Very Young Rhett Miller and A Very Young Salim Nourallah

Some great stuff from the "way back when" files popped up on the Internet this morning, courtesy Dragon Street Records owner David Dennard, who, once upon a time, helped produce Deep Ellum greats like Shallow Reign in the studio and put out the earliest Tripping Daisy releases on his label. Wanna see a couple videos from a very young Rhett Miller's 1987 performance on Dennard's cable access show Hi-Res Diner? OK, then. Here he is, singing "Song for Truman Capote".The show, part of the access ch

  • Scaraoke Boasted Some Actual Talent Last Night

The folks in attendance last night at "Scaraoke", the weekly Thursday night karaoke event hosted at the Libertine, got to bear witness to something of a treat: Rhett Miller joining in on the festivities.Or so the reputable Simon McDonald, the bar's owner, tells DC9 via an email: "The very gracious and always humble Rhett Miller just walked into the Libertine... and did a funtastic version of 'Ziggy Stardust'."Joining Miller in attendance last night were Barley House owner Richard Winfield and Su

Patrick MichelsRhett Miller tells kids how to avoid visibly aging past 16.We noted yesterday that Rhett Miller's in town to record a new solo album. Last night he played what was supposed to be a double-bill with Sarah Jaffe, to try out some of his new material in an acoustic show at Sons of Hermann Hall.Jaffe didn't make it (we had a little weather, as you might have heard) -- so Miller played solo, trying out some cuts off his new album, and closing with older solo work and a few from the Old

  • The Myth of Rhett Miller's Mythologies

This year marks the 20th anniversary of Rhett Miller's solo debut Mythologies, which I've still got somewhere -- it hides in a closet, no doubt in youthful shame. Doubt there'll be a double-disc deluxe reissue; oh, not if I can help it. Though, rather unbelievably, someone's selling their autographed and numbered copy of the disc on eBay in order to pay the mortgage. So, Old 97's fetishists, act now -- only a thousand copies of the album were made available (though I seem to recall cassettes?),

  • Rhett Miller Talks To Billboard About His Upcoming Solo Disc

Speaking of the 97's, news comes today via Billboard that Rhett Miller's fourth solo record will see release on June 9. The self-titled affair, which Miller recorded over the past two months at Salim Nourallah's Pleasantry Lane studios, also features a whole bunch of familiar names backing the 97's' frontman: Nourallah, Deathray Davies' John Dufilho, producer Jon Brion and the man who produced Nourallah's upcoming disc, Billy Harvey from Austin. The Billboard piece has plenty more info, too: ho

  • Rhett Miller Prepares To Not Watch Himself On 30 Rock On Thursday Night (Kinda).

The cover of Miller's upcoming solo disc. (Post updated at 4:34 p.m...see after jump)There's a lot of interesting things you can learn while following Rhett Miller on his Twitter account. For instance, a few weeks back, Miller said it was likely that the summer's upcoming Old 97's tour is going to be an "An Evening With..." kind of affair, with Miller and bandmate Murry Hammond each opening for the headlining band, performing their solo material. Which, actually, is a great idea. But the pa

  • A Little Insight Into Rhett Miller's Appearance On Tonight's 30 Rock Finale

Curious as to what Rhett Miller's appearance on 30 Rock will entail? Well, this two-minute preview of tonight's show should shed some light on what to expect: Basically, Alec Baldwin's character blackmails every musician he can think of into performing at a benefit concert for his newfound father, far as I can tell.Like Miller, our friend Declan MacManus, international art thief, is not amused, but caves nonetheless.

  • Rhett Miller, VEGA Get Tracked On Pitchfork

Two days, two area songsmiths getting their tracks reviewed in Pitchfork.com's "Track Reviews" feature. Not a bad precedent, I'd say. So how'd it go? Well, let's break it down...Yesterday, Pitchfork reviewed the new song from "No Reasons"--a song we've already gone on record as saying that we dig mightily--from VEGA's released-last-night-at-The-Lounge Well Known Pleasures EP. The tastemakers at the Chicago-based site give the song a six out of 10, which, sure, we'll go ahead and cry foul on. Li

  • A Big, Busy Day For Rhett Miller, Indeed.

The cover of Rhett Miller as taken by local photographer Jason Janik. If you ignore a brief dalliance from back in 1989, then, yes, today sees the official release of Rhett Miller's third solo record, a self-titled affair that's been getting the Old 97's frontman a whole lot of early attention from outlets like Pitchfork and Billboard, among others--including Magnet magazine, which, really, is going above and beyond in its support. How so? Ah, there's the rub: The magazine (which--can't believe we

  • Pitchfork Seems So-So On Rhett Miller, Which Is Fair, I Think?

Pitchfork's take on the new Rhett Miller disc is in--went up yesterday, in fact--and, despite the low score of 5.9 given to the self-titled album, the review reads mostly positively. Which speaks to a larger trend within the reactions this disc is garnering.Like most takes on Miller's solo works (including my own, available on racks as soon as later today), reviewer Joshua Klein struggles with the aim of this album. Problem is, as Klein also notes, it's tough to separate Miller's work from that

  • Bonus MP3: Rhett Miller -- "I Need To Know Where I Stand"

We've already kinda discussed the mixed feelings we--and others, too--seem to have about the new, self-titled, Salim Nourallah-produced disc from Rhett Miller. Namely, the problem, at least in my eyes, is the stark difference between the disc's (very strong) start and it's (somewhat limp to the) finish. But, as I say in my print review of the disc, it's still largely a very, very solid disc--Miller's best, for sure--thanks to the undeniable pop turns of the album's best tracks early on.And, among

If your Rhett Miller alarm was sounding off all morning and you just couldn't figure out why, North Of The Dial'er Daniel is here to help, pointing out that CNN's Shannon Cook sat down with Miller to feature him in today's installment of CNN's interview series "Music & Conversation." Caught up with Rhett Miller this morning over the phone--and overseas too, actually, as Miller's currently in the UK, out on tour as the opening act for Steve Earle. The bulk of the conversation focused largely on Miller's upcoming gig at the Grnada Theater on Saturday, November 14, as part of the annual CF Concert Series benefit show for Cystic Fibrosis research--an event we'll be giving away free passes to, starting on Monday. As for most of the conversation, well, let's save all that for nex

OK, so KERA's musical youth been on the air for, what, 60 minutes? First song played: Santana's "She's Not There" (probably a little too classic-rock for a new-station kick-off, you ask me), followed by Monsters of Folk, Ingrid Michaelson, Telegraph Canyon and ... well, look, the playlist is here, so there.
