  • Q&A: Nada Surf's Matthew Caws Wishes His Band Was Spinal Tap. Also: Another Giveaway!

The three parts of Nada Surf. (Peter Ellenby) Matthew Caws formed Nada Surf way back in 1993 and the band found success two years later when the song “Popular” became just that. Yet after a successful tour with alt/pop kindred spirit Superdrag, various snafus led to the band being dropped by its label. Luckily, Caws and fellow Surfers Daniel Lorca and Ira Elliot somehow kept from breaking completely apart and released what many believe to be their best record, 2000’s The Proximity Effe

  • Todd Rundgren to Produce Next New York Dolls Album

I know the local connection here is barely tangential, but two of the best shows to come through our area this past year were The New York Dolls at The Granada in April and Todd Rundgren at House of Blues in July. Now news comes that Rundgren is producing the next Dolls' effort. Back in the summer, Rundgren, the aging pop icon, surprised his audience by digging deep into his back catalog and performing "I Saw the Light" and "Couldn't I Just Tell You." Yet, even his most recent material, from t

  • Octogenarian Christmas: The Five Best Rock CDs Made By Older Folk In 2008

In all these year-end, best-of lists, I'm seeing little respect given to the over 50 crowd. So, since I'm heading that direction myself, I thought I would be the one to share some AARP Holiday Cheer. 1. Lindsey Buckingham - Gift of Screws The Fleetwood Mac guitarist/singer finally incorporates some of what made his band so great and produces his best solo effort. By far. Period. Of course, several members of Mac (not Stevie Nicks) make an appearance on Gift of Screws and songs like "Did You Mi

  • Gig Alert: New York Dolls Tonight at House of Blues' Pontiac Garage

Those lucky enough to catch the legendary New York Dolls at the Granada the last time they visited Dallas were treated to a hell of a show. Even though the band is down to two original members (vocalist David Johnasen and guitarist Syl Sylvain, both in their '60s), the band never-the-less kicked serious ass, blazing through its classic '70s glam material as well as new stuff that was almost as good. Thank goodness that this most unlikely of reunions appears to be still going strong. 'Cau

  • Pitchfork On Neon Indian: "Best New Music"

Psychic Chasm's cover.Probably should've seen this coming: Today, Pitchfork honored Neon Indian with its much-sought-after "Best New Music" tag, giving the album an 8.6 on its 10-point scale. As for the review itself? It's loving enough, namedropping some pretty heavy hitters--LCD Soundsystem, Daft Punk, Kevin Shields, Atlas Sound--just to make its point. Funny, though, that among all those names (even Hall & Oates gets a reference), one is blatantly missing: Todd Rundgren. After all, two
