100 Favorite Dishes: Meatloaf Blue Plate Special At Norma's Cafe
As a countdown to the Dallas Observer's "Best of Dallas" 2010, City of Ate is serving up 100 of the favorite dishes we crave, savor and hope to scarf down again soon. These dishes are in no particular order. Some are little known, others celebrated. Some are pricey, others can be eaten on the cheap, but all are delicious to the extreme. No. 56: Meatloaf Blue Plate Special At Norma's Cafe
Nothing says comfort food like meatloaf and mashed potatoes, and nobody does comfort food like Norma's Cafe. The huge breakfasts and sweet grandmotherly waitresses make the 54-year-old Oak Cliff institution a great place to nurse a hangover, but the dinners are not to be overlooked. Particularly the house specialty meatloaf, a juicy and savory creation that's got a much more favorable meat-to-loaf ratio than our pinch-penny mother's recipe. Served with a tangy fresh tomato sauce and three -- count 'em, three! -- sides, about the only complaint we have is that the place doesn't stay open later than 8 p.m. on weeknights for dinner. Then again, Mom didn't tolerate us coming late to the dinner table, either.
