100 Favorite Dishes, No. 90: Banh Mi from La Me
This picture is not much to look at, but what's in that paper is worth the drive.

With such a large Vietnamese population in Dallas, this list would be incomplete without a banh mi sandwich, even two. The last time I named my 100 Favorite Dishes, I choose Nammi's version for a number of reasons, including availability. Why drive out to the suburbs when Nammi will drive to you?
Nammi still makes a great sandwich, and it's easily one of the best food trucks dodging potholes in the streets of Dallas, but for this year's list I'm going with La Me's Banh Mi. They're just too good, and too cheap.
You'll see the menu just inside the door at the end of the counter, offering a variety of meats and toppings for around three bucks apiece. There are grilled pork options and sliced meat options and meatball options. If you're a fan of pâté (it's hardly a banh mi without), look for options with "soft sausage" in the description and you'll end up with plenty of the good stuff. Ask for extra pickles, too.
Each sandwich gets slathered with butter, mayonnaise and pâté before it's layered with your choice of toppings, heaped with tart and crunchy pickled daikon and carrots cut like french fries and wrapped in paper like a hoagie. At three bucks each you can see why they go quickly, and the restaurant runs out of the bread they use often. Get there early for lunch, or think about waiting till tomorrow.
