Des Moines, Iowa-based Maid-Rite corporation promises to descend en masse upon the DFW metroplex, blanketing the area in its popular "loose meat" sandwich, tucked inside a mass produced white-bread bun.
The 85-year-old corporation has targeted a Arlington's Green Oaks Shopping Center at the corner of West Green Oaks Boulevard and Pleasant Ridge Road. This first location is to be one of 50, presuming the find people at Maid-Rite can find enough locations that fit their criteria: Large, 3,000-3,500 square-feet spaces, in major retail centers with high visibility. Perhaps they're hoping everyone will be able to see the bubble gum walls that have plagued at other locations. I can't think of a finer way to welcome the Maid-Rite corporation to Dallas.
Fred Angell opened the first Maid-Rite in 1926, popularizing his loose meat sandwich. The mixture of ground meat cooked with spices resembles a sauce-less sloppy Joe and comes in a number of variations, including taco, chili, Philly cheese steak and soon-to-be-local-favorite BBQ Texas. Burritos, corn dogs and other sandwiches dot the menu, which is one fat heart attack waiting to happen. You can wash your gluttony down with fountain drinks, floats, and a variety of milkshakes.
"If you haven't tasted a Maid-Rite loose meat sandwich you haven't lived," touts one testimonial on the Maid-Rite website. I haven't tasted loose meat, but I'm hesitant to believe the $3.19 sandwich is all that stands between me and a bigger, more enriching life. Watch out Texas BBQ chopped beef -- loose meat promises to be just as underwhelming.
