When you were a kid, Mother's Day was easy. All you had to do was make a potholder or an ashtray in art class and make sure it didn't fall apart or shatter between taking it home on Friday and presenting it (along with a similarly ill-crafted breakfast in bed) on Sunday morning.
But unless you're a gifted artist, once you get to be, oh, 13 or so, handmade gifts go from cute to a sign that you're a cheapskate. Still making things for mom at 30? Not good.

That doesn't mean you can't save a little cash, though. Through Sunday, Veritas Wine Room (2323 N. Henderson Ave.) will discount your "bubbles" (sparkling wine, one presumes) purchase by 15 percent if you're willing to whisper the word "bubbles" to a staffer. Don't know what happens if you burst in and shout "bubbles." The wine room will also offer half-price glasses of wine all day on Mother's Day.
