McDonald's Reveals Olympic Park 1,500-Seater And Swears Athletes Will Fill the Place
Today McDonald's revealed its new 1,500-seat flagship restaurant at the Olympic Park in London, which weighs in at 32,000 square feet.
The Sun newspaper in London reports that the flagship location, which is one of four in Olympic Park, is the largest McDonald's in the world. (But, a franchise in Russia disputes that fact.)
Jill McDonald, chief executive at McDonald's UK told The Sun yesterday, "The one in the Athletes Village is likely to be the busiest of all of them and athletes know more than most people what they should and shouldn't be eating."
Say what? Can't imagine too many coaches leaving the cooler packed with healthy snacks back at camp saying instead, "Oh they have four McDonalds there. There'll be plenty of good food."
McDonalds has been on the defensive lately since for the first time in the company's history it is battling lagging consumer confidence, specifically abroad.
These four restaurants in Olympic Park are built under "sustainable" guidelines, with energy efficient kitchens and water-saving faucets, express lanes and "contactless payment speed throughput."
The menu will include the staples like Big Macs, french fries and chicken nuggets. They are also adding a few regional items like porridge (no fish and chips). To match their sustainable kitchen equipment, they have sustainable tea and coffee, which will be served with organic milk from the UK.
McDonalds expects to serve some 50,000 Big Macs over the course of four weeks. I'm betting they do. They'll kill it. Tired, worn-out families and visitors will see the golden arches as a familiar reprieve. I'm not saying they should. I'm just saying they will. The familiarity will draw them in.
The athletes? Not so sure about that.
After the games are over, the McDonald's in Olympic Park will be broken down and 75 percent will be shipped off to other restaurants around the country.
