Pranom, the Popular L.A. Thai Pop-Up Restaurant, Is Coming to Dallas
Limited-time-only pad Thai.
Pop-up restaurants are, well, popping up all over the country, and Dallas is no exception. Outside of Dallas-based underground dinners like those put on by chefs like David Anthony Temple (Chef DAT), our fair city is attracting chefs from afar who are interested in bringing their cuisine to Dallas.
Gwyneth Paltrow's GOOP recently popped up in Highland Park Village with its brand of healthy eats, and restaurants like FT33 and Oak have been bringing in chefs from cities like Houston, Atlanta, and San Antonio for one-night-only dinner events. Now, CultureMap reports that a popular Los Angeles chef plans to cook up his Than street food at Ten Bells Tavern on New Year's Eve.
The pop-up restaurant, called Pranom, has received rave reviews in other cities that it has visited. Pranom chef Dream Kasestatad is a one-man band, cranking out classic Thai dishes like pad Thai and drunken noodles with flair and ease across Los Angeles and San Francisco. According to CultureMap, Kasestatad moved to Los Angeles from Lubbock, Texas, to be an actor and producer. He has since had a few roles in television and film, including an uncredited appearance as "Frat Boy" in an episode of Showtime's Dexter.
Kasestatad's culinary career, though, has been far more successful. Pranom has been on a cross-country tour with Kasestatad at the helm, serving up plates of Thai to packed crowds for around $10. The stop at Ten Bells Tavern is part of Pranom's jaunt across Texas, with stops also planned for Austin and, of course, Lubbock. According to the event's Facebook page, Pranom will be serving classic pad see ew, pad Thai, and drunken noodles, complete with vegetarian options.
Plates of Kasestatad's noodles and curries will cost just $12, and he only accepts cash. The $12 price is a bargain, especially when you consider the cost of mediocre drunken noodles and pad Thai at many of the city's Thai restaurants. Kasestatad will be cooking in the Ten Bells Tavern kitchen for this event, which is a slight departure from his usual pop-ups. Typically, Kasestatad sets up shop on a patio or lot and cooks in view of hungry diners.
Ten Bells Tavern will begin taking orders at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, and the Facebook event suggests that food will start coming out of the kitchen at around 9 -- first come, first served. Unlike most other New Year's Eve events, though, Ten Bells Tavern won't be charging a cover, so you can at least smell the delicious noodles for free if you don't make it in time to eat them. If you do plan to eat, and past Pranom pop-ups are any indication, you should probably plan to get there early -- these noodles are going to go fast.
