Tipsy-Turvy: Building Alcohol Tolerance In 10 Days
There's always that person at the annual company holiday party. That person who can't handle their liquor. That person you tease the following morning when you pass their cubicle. I don't have to keep explaining -- you know who I'm talking about. And that person is very often me.
It's not because I'm an alcoholic. In fact, it's because I don't drink enough.
This year I'm determined not to be that person. How? I'm training myself to handle my liquor. The company party is Thursday, December 17. That means I have less than 10 days to boost my tolerance. Good thing I've already started. Today at lunch with four of my coworkers, I had two beers. Tonight, I'll have a few shots of whiskey.
You get the point. I'm going to drink and drink until I'm positive that I can have five drinks within two hours and not appear drunk.
Usually I'm slurring after one drink.
I make few promises but serious ones nonetheless. I will consult a doctor to figure out if there is a way to safely increase your tolerance. But I'm not going to hold my breath that they'll have anything valuable to say. Instead, I'm going to rely on my friends and my past experiences.
I've already received valuable advice. "Drink on an empty stomach - that will definitely boost your tolerance," a coworker told me at lunch today.
As it is, I have a terribly low tolerance. Last week, I went to dinner with my sister at the new Samar restaurant in downtown. We split a bottle of wine. As I finished my second glass, I saw her looking back at me in horror. I could see her regarding me as an unpredictable drunk person already! After only two glasses, she noted, my voice was raised; I was more belligerent; and, of course, I was slurring my speech.
Not this holiday party. I'll be logging my progress in a notebook and I'll be sure to check back in on this blog before the holiday party next week. Until then, Happy drinking!
