On Tuesday, June 11, we're having a night of storytelling on the Sundown at Granada's gorgeous rooftop. We've partnered with them, Oral Fixation and some local musicians to make it happen, and we'll be giving away prizes. All of the stories will be ripped from real life, so grab some drinks and cozy up for an evening of true confessions. (Oh, it's free.)
This weekend you'll want to hunker down in Oak Cliff, where a certain film festival has taken over. There's also amazingly weird theater over at the Ochre House, Dead White Zombies have occupied a crack house, taxidermy art gets auctioned off by Art Conspiracy, Jerry Seinfeld passes through, and there's even a party for your dog. Thursday 6.6 Oak Cliff Film Festival -- It's the biggest little fest in town, and we're completely enamored. The OCFF takes over a dozen historic sites this weekend, uniting casual and insatiable film lovers. There's a Pussy Riot documentary, a throwback film about computer chess and a croquet match. Oh, and Bobcat Goldthwait will be there, so you can finally get that copy of Hot to Trot autographed.
Dead White Zombies Presents T.N.B. -- This new theater installation by DWZ takes place in an abandoned crack house, requires some light breaking and entering and serves food. I mean, we're ALL GOING TO THIS, right?
Friday 6.7 Van Cliburn International Piano Competition's Final Rounds -- Think World Cup of piano and you've got the Cliburn. It's been going on for two weeks and this weekend it crescendos into the final rounds. Check it out and hear the world's best musicians. Bonus: They make extremely funny faces when they play.
The Dirty, Sexy, Funny Show -- Good burlesque doesn't take itself too seriously. Great burlesque makes you snort laugh. Dirty Sexy Funny is the latter, so join its cast of comedic vixens on Friday and let 'em unbuckle your chuckle.
Good Nuts at the Ochre House -- Just go see this. Ochre House always brings the absurdity to Expo Park, but this new comedy takes that further by prodding the repressed sexual reflexes of office drones and putting them on display. It's fantastic, weird and completely worth your time.
Gruesome Playground Injuries at Second Thought Theatre -- Could our lives' narratives be summarized through our scars? They can for the protagonist tag team of this popular piece of contemporary theater by playwright Rajiv Joseph.
Saturday 6.8 19th Annual Dog Day Afternoon -- Dog Day Afternoon is like canine Christmas. Oh, and there's a free pet psychic so you'll finally figure out why your furchild devours your possessions like the smoke monster from Lost.
Art Conspiracy Presents "Mounted" -- It's big. It's weird. It's ... mounted? Yes! The annual Art Con seed event and auction occupies Life in Deep Ellum on Saturday night for an all-taxidermy themed affair. Show up. Bid high. Get mounted.
Jerry Seinfeld -- Find out "What's the DEAL with Dallas?" as veteran comic/perfectionist Jerry Seinfeld drops by the Winspear for a rare stand-up performance.
Talley Dunn Presents Clear View and Pleased to Meet Me -- This show's a twofer: You'll get the nature-rich art of Helen Altman and a group show assembled from some of our most promising local talents.
Pop-Up Graffiti Art Show on the sidewalk of 1900 Main Street -- There's very little information about this event -- really just a time, an address and the promise of an exploration of "a psychic narrative through graffiti-like drawings and archived object collections." The reception happens on a sidewalk, at 1900 Main St. from 6 to 9 p.m. on Saturday.
Sunday 6.9 Sister Act in Fair Park -- It's nuns gone wild in Fair Park when your favorite Whoopi flick gets the live stage treatment at Dallas Summer Musicals.
"The Invention of Drawing" -- This exhibition is part interactive art installation, part investigation of how soldiers re-assimilate to domestic life upon returning from war. The show, which encourages veterans to attend and make art, takes place in two homes that are being donated to wounded warriors. It's heavy stuff, and it runs for two days only, Saturday (noon to 6 p.m.) and Sunday (noon to 5 p.m.).
Tuesday 6.11 True Stories: Behind the Music -- We've joined forces with the Granada, Oral Fixation and some local musicians to bring Dallas a night of free, live storytelling, based on true-life events. Think The Moth, but drunker and on tour. There will be giveaways, $3 wells and drafts and a collection of the city's most interesting humans, all on a lovely rooftop.
