Now that it’s October, things are about to get insane. For whatever reason, the last few months of the year seem to go by more quickly than those long, dragging summer months. Perhaps it has something to do with how busy we are this time of year, which may be attributed to the insane amount of cool, cheap shit to do in Dallas.
This week, you can talk politics over frozen alcoholic beverages, explore a new neighborhood and bid on art while benefiting a good cause, all for less than the cost of one fancy cocktail. The evenings are chilly now (thankfully), so grab a sweater and head out to one of these budget-friendly events this week.
Bar Politics: Who Gives a Truck About the Budget?
Wednesday, October 7
Bar Politics continues to be one of Dallas’ most interesting events. This week’s might sound yawn-inducing, but it continues the trend. Last month, the Dallas City Council finalized next year’s budget, and Councilman Philip Kingston will be there to help you sort it all out. There probably isn’t any money in the budget directly allocated to you (if only), but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t care about the other things the city funds, like roads and art and music and firemen. If you start to get bored, just remember you’re at the Truck Yard and can drink a lot.
#GetOffMyLawn Cedars Neighborhood Walk
Wednesday, October 7
If you’ve ever wondered what the Cedars area of Dallas is all about (beyond all those concerts you’ve seen at the Gilley’s complex and cocktails at Cedars Social), this is your chance. You’ll start at Emilio’s, where you can have a cocktail to loosen up your nerves before hanging out with strangers, then take a walking tour of this trendy Dallas neighborhood led by locals. Who knows, maybe you’ll end up making a new friend or even finding a new place to live.
Nasher Garden Party
Nasher Sculpture Center
Thursday, October 8
You’ll need to RSVP for this event, but it’s great if you want a luxe experience but don't have any cash to spend. At the Nasher Sculpture Center’s annual soiree among the statues, you’ll enjoy a Stanley Korshak fashion show, yard games and the Center’s exhibition, Chalet Dallas. Most important, though, there will be free Champagne and snacks provided by Wolfgang Puck Catering, along with free valet. Score.
Saturday, October 10
Jefferson Tower Events
It isn’t often that you get to enjoy a really cheap good time and benefit a good cause, but Diorama-O-Rama is an easy way to do both. Your $10 will get you admission to the auction of dioramas judged by locals, along with a locally screened-printed tote bag full of goodies from Oak Cliff shops. If you’ve got extra cash, you can buy a diorama in the auction, or just enjoy the DJs and free snacks while admiring the art.
