Based on a true story, North Face is a suspenseful man-vs.-nature film about a competition to climb one of the most dangerous rock faces in the Swiss Alps. Set in 1936, the film follows the paths of four climbers--two German and two Austrian--as they take on the north face of the Eiger. The trailer does a fine job of distilling the plot: "They would give anything to reach the summit. They would give even more to get back down." So, expect lots of dramatic missteps and edge-of-your-seat frights, because the trailer is chock full of clips of hands searching for a hold or ropes slipping through fingers or carabiners, intercut with close-ups of the actors wearing tense, frightened scowls. Most critics liked the film, though some disliked the romantic and political asides. The film is in German with English subtitles. North Face screens at 6 and 8:15 p.m. Friday, 5 p.m. Saturday and 2 and 4 :15 p.m. Sunday at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, 3200 Darnell St., as part of the Magnolia at the Modern series.
