Get In-Volver-ed

If you're like me at this time of year, you're scrambling to catch up on all the movies that get nominated for whatever upcoming awards only because they seem to all come out in a three-week period between Thanksgiving and New Year's. Yes, it's mostly good stuff, but every couple of years there's a single true gem in the mix. And usually those gems are from Pedro Almodóvar. This year he gives us Volver starring Penélope Cruz, who is getting a lot of attention for her role as Raimunda in this story of two sisters and their relationship with their life-after-death mother. She's nominated for both a Golden Globe and a Screen Actor's Guild award, which echoes the success of Nicole Kidman, post-Tom Cruise. The Magnolia at the Modern film series screens this one in overdrive. Showings begin Friday and run weekends through January 28 at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, 3200 Darnell St..
