What do you buy a white rhinoceros for his birthday? They don't really have a sweet tooth--they spend most of their time eating grass--so treats are out. The indignities we heap on our dogs in the form of cute sweaters aren't an option, 'cause a 6-year-old rhino weighs almost 4,000 pounds (and would look totally ridiculous in one). There's just not much in the way of rhino gifts that would work for birthday boy Emmitt at Fossil Rim Wildlife Center, but that's OK, there's no gift required at this celebration. Emmitt is happy just wandering around his home, hanging with the other rhinos and maybe sporting a party hat on his horn for his sixth birthday. And you're invited to the party from 8:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. Saturday, when there will be tours of the Wildlife Center all day long, as well as a festive party at the Center's Overlook. There will be goodies to snack on, music to dance to and lots to learn, as the Rhino Species Survival Plan Coordinator will be on hand to answer all of your questions about Southern White Rhinos just like Emmitt. The Fossil Rim Wildlife Center is located at 2299 County Road 2008 in Glen Rose. Admission is $10 for members and $35 for non-members. Call 254-898-4250 for reservations.
Sat., Nov. 1, 8:30 a.m.-3:30 p.m., 2008
