Back when I was in my big '50s phase at about 12 years old, I was appalled to learn that my mother once traded an Elvis autograph (my granddad rode on a plane with him once) for Pat Boone's. Seriously. See, she grew up on oil bases and all the music she knew came from the 45s sent to her by her aunt. Boone, Anka...you get the idea. The Pelvis meant nothing to her until she moved back to the States and learned of the small fortune she had denied herself (and her children, ahem) by trading that signature. Do what my mother never did and celebrate the King's birthday 7 p.m. to close Monday at Dick's Last Resort, Houston and Lamar streets near Victory Park. The party'll be complete with an impersonator, an Elvis karaoke contest and drink specials, and surely someone will wear blue suede shoes. Mom will not attend. Call 214-747-0001.
