John Steinbeck once said that he was doing his “damndest to rip a reader’s nerves to rags” while writing his classic The Grapes of Wrath. If you’ve spent any time with that tome at all, you know the son of a gun succeeded: He eased you in with droughts and foreclosures and then rolled through dead dogs, dead grandpas, dead grandmas, dead preachers, mental breakdowns ... and dead babies. Thing about The Grapes of Wrath is, it’s a sad affair. There’s no getting around it. But it’s also a stirring testament to the power of family and a paean to the human ability to slog through the worst kind of shit and still keep l-i-v-i-n, you know? So, yes, focus on the uplift and light through all that Dust Bowl dark during the WaterTower Theatre’s adaptation of this Tony-winner at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday.
