Mars living is a joyless affair for its native children, and it’s easy to understand why: There’s no Santa. Why, he’s marooned way down on Earth, tinkering away at the North Pole while those poor little alien youths sit twirling their thumbs, bored as all git-up. Well, not anymore. Not if Kilmar, the head of the martian people, has anything to say about it — or at least that’s the story that Santa Claus vs. the Martians, a stage adaptation of a similarly-titled 1964 sci-flop, would like to convince you. The show’s in its final stretch at Level Ground Arts at KD Studio Theatre (Trinity River Arts Theatre, 2600 N. Stemmons Freeway), running on Friday and Saturday nights through December 29, and has been laser beaming in the positive reviews by local critics. They’re digging on writer/director Andi Allen’s campy, low-budget wink at an already scoffed-at early model film in which scrubs are used as space suits and tin foil finds its way into everything. Visit levelgroundarts.com for more information. Tickets cost $15 for kids and $20 for adults; get them at brownpapertickets.com/event/294582.
Fridays, Saturdays. Starts: Dec. 22. Continues through Dec. 29, 2012

Keep the Dallas Observer Free... Since we started the Dallas Observer, it has been defined as the free, independent voice of Dallas, and we would like to keep it that way. Offering our readers free access to incisive coverage of local news, food and culture. Producing stories on everything from political scandals to the hottest new bands, with gutsy reporting, stylish writing, and staffers who've won everything from the Society of Professional Journalists' Sigma Delta Chi feature-writing award to the Casey Medal for Meritorious Journalism. But with local journalism's existence under siege and advertising revenue setbacks having a larger impact, it is important now more than ever for us to rally support behind funding our local journalism. You can help by participating in our "I Support" membership program, allowing us to keep covering Dallas with no paywalls.
