It's that time of year again when the rich and famous flock to the south of France to take part in lavish yacht parties and view fantastic pieces of cinema months before the rest of us will even have a shot at them. In fact, some 2008 Festival de Cannes favorites like Atom Egoyan's Adoration, which was nominated for the coveted Cannes Palme D'Or award last year, are just now making their way to us. The film follows an orphaned high school student who, after reading a news story about a terrorist act, begins to imagine his deceased parents as part of the tragedy. Using the story, he pieces together his "family history" for a class assignment and then shares it on the Internet to much backlash and controversy. The film stars Rachel Blanchard (Sally from Flight of the Conchords) and up-and-comer Devon Bostick as the young man in search of his identity. Adoration is playing this Friday through Sunday as part of Magnolia at the Modern (3200 Darnell St. in Fort Worth), an ongoing series featuring critically acclaimed films. Tickets are $8.50 or $6.50 for Modern members. Advance sales begin two hours before each show. For more information, visit themodern.org/magnolia.html.
