Revival Time, and the Living Is Easy

You know songs from Porgy and Bess already, even if you aren’t aware of it. And if you aren’t aware of it, then you should be. The opera is more than 80 years old now and the opening song, “Summertime,” is as recognizable as “Habanera” from Carmen. “It Ain’t Necessarily So” has been performed by Sammy Davis Jr. and Cher, while Nina Simone and Christina Aguilera have covered “I Loves You, Porgy.” Written by DuBose Heyward and George and Ira Gershwin, Porgy and Bess returned to Broadway after a 35-year absence in 2011, this time titled The Gershwins’ Porgy and Bess (sorry, Heyward), winning the 2012 Tony for Best Revival. The Dallas premiere starts at 8 p.m. Wednesday at the AT&T Performing Arts Center, 2403 Flora St. Tickets range from $30 to $120 and the show runs until December 22.
