Singin' Carroll

Down-home Texas singer-songwriters aren't just a dime a dozen 'round these here parts; they're a penny a gross. What keeps Adam Carroll from being just another drop in the guy-and-his-guitar bucket is an approach to the well-heeled genre that is both effortless and expert. More akin to storytelling than songwriting, Carroll's lyrics tell tales in broad strokes and quick flashes, supplying just enough imagery to put the picture in our heads with melodies that are warm and casually unassuming, but nonetheless memorable. Indie alt. country, Top 40 pop country and general faux country have spewed out in recent years and in many interchangeable guises. Luckily, Carroll's music is too closely rooted in the traditions of the Haggards, Jenningses and Twittys of this world to be concerned with any contemporary competition. Adam Carroll plays 8 p.m. Friday at Bend Studio, 5014 McKinney Ave. Cover is $15 in advance. For more info, call 214-606-0770 or visit
