The Alt-Weeklies Of Football

Why is it that team names, logos and mascots are so much cooler at the lower levels of professional sports? Dallas' NFL team is the Cowboys, whose logo is a blue star--both pretty boring if you look at them objectively, without considering their historic significance. But its Arena Football team is the Vigilantes, and has a wickedly grinning skull and crossed six-shooters for a logo--infinitely more badass. They take on the Tulsa Talons (another cool name) at 7:30 p.m. Friday at the American Airlines Center. Tickets ($27 to $99) are available at 800-745-3000 or ticketmaster.com. Remaining schedule is at dallasvigilantes.com.
Fri., June 11, 7:30 p.m., 2010
