Apart from their being really good at spinning and dunking and doing a lot of other crazy things with a basketball, there is probably a great deal you don't know about the Harlem Globetrotters. For instance: Henry Kissinger, Whoopi Goldberg and Pope John Paul II are all honorary Harlem Globetrotters. Additionally, the group was founded sometime in the '20s, hails from the South Side of Chicago and originally played competitive basketball before their flair for the showboating and performing became the main focus of the team. They also have a mascot, creatively named "Globie," whose birthday is Earth Day and looks just like the red, white, and blue-clad players except for having a very large globe as a head. If all of this has you beside yourself with hopes of seeing the Globetrotters in action, you're in luck. The team has a two-day stop in Big D this weekend at the American Airlines Center, with shows at 1 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday. Be prepared though, as Whoopi is only an honorary member, so she will most likely not be there making shots from half-court. For tickets and more information, visit ticketmaster.com.
Sat., Jan. 29, 1 p.m.; Sun., Jan. 30, 2 p.m., 2011
