Downtown's Wilson Building offers everything a Dallas resident sick of the Soviet-style housing blocks that dot the city could want. It's more that 110 years old, has beautiful hardwood floors, higher ceilings than you'll find almost anywhere and more vintage touches than you'll ever notice. There's quick access to DART rail and an onsite parking garage if you're not quite ready to give up your car. Mix in reasonable rents, a roof deck, top-floor theater room and access to all the amenities offered by its sister buildings — The Mercantile and Continental — across the street and you've got one of Dallas' best rental values.
Jeff Gibbons, Susan Kae Grant and Julie Buck Jones are just a few of the many artists represented by Conduit Gallery in the Dallas Design District. Since opening the gallery in 1984, owner and director Nancy Whitenack, who founded the space without any formal art training, has brought the work of established, mid-career artists and emerging talent to the public, showing works by artists not represented elsewhere. The space features an assortment of contemporary works, including paintings, photographs and sculptures, and is one of Dallas' top destinations for avant-garde and experimental pieces.
It's 10:15 in the morning on an ordinary Friday that's otherwise indistinguishable from any other weekday. Your plan to swing in early to Cattleack Barbecue, however, is shared by the 50 or so people already in line when you arrive. Picking our Best of Dallas winners is by no means a popularity contest, but it's no coincidence that the lines form early for Cattleack's spectacular barbecue. And it's not just the excellent fare on the regular menu; each week, Cattleack cranks out a special item or two that will instantly elevate your meal (and for that matter, the rest of your day) from ordinary to out-of-your-mind amazing.
Before retiring in 2018, Jason Witten was a very good tight end for a very long time with the Cowboys, putting together a Hall of Fame career over 15 seasons. During the 2018 season, he was a very, very bad color commentator on Monday Night Football for ESPN. In February, Witten decided to come down from the booth and take another shot at winning his first Super Bowl. Good for fans of Monday Night Football, good for Cowboys fans.
Once you get the Knowles family seal of approval, it's only up from there. In March, Charles Smith II's designs were featured in a short film accompanying the release of Solange's fourth studio album, When I Get Home. Smith couldn't actually be at the set of the short film, so fabric was sent in a Lyft from Houston to Dallas. Upon receiving the materials, Smith put together the costumes and sent them back to Houston in a Lyft within the span of 48 hours. Smith's fashions boast elegant, luxurious flair, with a Southern touch. In addition to being a master in runway craft, Smith also specializes in streetwear. His Do Not Touch line consists of designs for both men and women, all of which are artsy, stylish and comfortable.
Dirk Nowitzki's Mavericks farewell was a long one. Every time the Mavs stopped in an NBA city for the last time during the 2018-19 season, fans lavished the big German with appreciation for his two-decade career in Dallas. Mavericks fans got to say their own goodbyes a few dozen times and turned every home game in which Nowitzki played into a celebration. Still, when the end came on April 9, no one was ready. Next season, for the first time since the 1997-'98 season, the Mavericks will have to find their way without the greatest player in franchise history.
