Each year as the big tops roll into town, it strikes me that the circus is just about the one enterprise that hasn’t changed much over the last century. Why would it? It’s a formula that’s worked beautifully despite economic challenges and technological innovations and is just about immune to the passage of time. No matter what video games you’ve got stockpiled at home, there just aren’t a lot of kids who’ll pass up a chance at the circus. After a certain age, though, you’ve seen one circus and you’ve seen ’em all. Clowns, aerialists, magicians, animals ... the formula gets a little stale. Enter one Cedric Walker, an entrepreneur looking to inject the tried-and-true circus experience with a little bit of soul. Walker created the UniverSoul Circus, which infuses the grandstands with a little R&B and a diverse family atmosphere featuring international acts and fresh new takes on the circus experience. UniverSoul features everything you’d expect at a circus, but with a funky little twist. The UniverSoul Circus will sit right outside Southwest Center Mall, 3662 West Camp Wisdom Road, offering spectacular shows at 10:30 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, August 8. Visit ticketmaster.com for more showtimes and to buy tickets, which are priced at $15.
Wed., Aug. 8, 7:30 p.m., 2012
