“Caligrafitizm.” That’s the first word you see when you look up graffiti artist Soner’s website. What does it mean? Well, it’s an amalgamation of his largest influences: calligraphy, typography, graffiti and graphic design, and it truly describes his work. His large-scale murals are fantastical explorations of the interplay between text and natural elements. That desire to explore nature through an art form that sometimes disregards the sanctity of a building or space is an interesting theme to his two-person show with painter Patricia Rodriguez at Kirk Hopper Fine Art, Urban Nature. Graffiti generally happens outside in the sprawl of the city, but we never really pay attention to what happens when nature takes over. Soner and Rodriguez are putting those effects front and center and inside the pristine white walls of the gallery. The opening reception takes place at 6:30 p.m. Saturday at Kirk Hopper Fine Art (3008 Commerce St.). It remains on display through August 9. More information is available at kirkhopperfineart.com.
Sat., July 12, 6:30-8 p.m.; Tuesdays-Saturdays, 12-6 p.m. Starts: July 12. Continues through Aug. 9, 2014
