To fully understand the life of a poet, you’ll need to imagine working tirelessly, baring your soul and locking yourself in your room for hours on end, only to find yourself broke and unappreciated. Now imagine you continue this for 20 years while everyone tells you to give up, to get a real job, when suddenly you learn you are the recipient of a prize that comes with a fat check. The joy of that moment might be tantamount to Katie Peterson’s experience when she learned her book of poetry, The Accounts, earned her the University of North Texas Rilke Prize. Join Peterson and UNT at the Dallas Institute of Humanities and Culture, 2719 Routh St., at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday for a reception, followed by a reading of Peterson’s award-winning poetry. The event is free and open to the public. More information at english.unt.edu.
