Teamwork can lead to great things when executed perfectly, but then there’s that whole “only as strong as the weakest link” thing—it’s hard to excel when your co-chair on the company party-planning committee routinely “forgets” to book venues and order food. Theater, of course, is a little different in this regard—part of the magic is watching the interplay between group members. But sometimes, stripping this interplay away creates its own special charms, and those are just the things celebrated during the 2014 Dallas Solo Fest. In its first year, Audacity Theater’s Kickstarter-funded event showcases 8 different one-man shows from mostly local and regional talents, with productions ranging from dark biographical tales to adults-only noir fantasies. And if you’re interested in stepping into the spotlight yourself, the festival also offers a number of workshops offering insights on subjects like securing publicity or harnessing the gift of physical comedy. The festival runs at the Margo Jones Theater in Fair Park, 1121 First Avenue, on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays from May 15 through May 25. Plays begin at 7:30 each night; workshop times are at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. on Saturdays. See dallassolofest.com for specifics and to purchase tickets, which will run you $12 per show or $55 for a festival pass, plus $20 to $30 per workshop.
Thursdays-Saturdays, 7:30 p.m.; Sundays, 3:30 p.m. Starts: May 15. Continues through May 25, 2014
