Serious Pizza at 2807 Elm St. in Deep Ellum has gotten some play here before. Last summer Cheap Bastard couldn't fit a large pizza in a Ford Escape, and we've also included them in a "Best of" here and there.
Last week I had the good fortune to try the gargantuan pizzas at Serious Pizza. There are a few things you should all know though, other than the fact that it's a challenge to finish even one slice.
First of all, on Mondays they have $1 drafts with the purchase of food. When available that includes Deep Ellum Brewing Company's IPA, but more regularly Blue Moon, Shiner, and Fancy Lawnmower (the brews change).
Other beer specials include $1.50 Natty Light, $2 PBR tallboys, Lonestar and Schlitz and $3 for the standards. Then, for good measure, at the very bottom left-hand corner of their stand up cooler behind the bar, they keep three tidy lines of 40s including Olde English, Hurricane and King Cobra -- three bucks each. For a classy touch, they even have koozies for the 40s.
Also, some may say the music is all over the place. It's not. It's genius, my friends. Heavy metal, the Ramones, followed by a musical interlude that could have been on, say, the Bourne Supremacy. You either get it or you don't. If you don't, just try to tune it out (which might be a challenge considering they crank it when a song comes on they're particularly fond of).
The next important thing you need to know is that it's actually very possible to eat healthy here. I had a spinach salad with fresh veggies along with a slice of their Veggie 2.0 pizza and it was probably the healthiest thing I ate all week.
Go for the cold beer, order a monster pizza, sink in a booth and watch a game while enjoying the music. Or grab a stool at the bar and watch them throw dough that could blanket for a small car. If you're getting a pie to go, entrust a brute to run a block pattern ahead of you to clear a route for you and your awkwardly large pizza box to the door.
They serve pizza by the slice ($3.25 - $5.25), and the full pizzas start at 18 inches ($11.95 + $1.75 for toppings), and go up to 30 inches extra large ($22.75 + $4.00 per topping). They also have nine specialty pizzas, including a pesto and white pizza. Check the complete menu here. They open at 11:30 a.m. seven days a week and stay open until 3:00 a.m. Thursday through Saturday.
