Fry Street's post-lecture-pre-booze-then-post-booze food options are expanding yet again with the addition of a Pie Five Pizza Co., slated to open in the
next two weeks or so (according to a guy with a hammer and bucket and painty jeans). Correction: According to an email Pie Five, bucket man was optimistic. They open in mid-January.
Pie Five will be Fry Street's first attempt at pizza since the fiery death of the Flying Tomato in 2007 and will likely garner some serious business, much like neighboring Chipotle, PotBelly, Macdaddy's and the newest addition, Yogurtland.
Recently named one of four new "Hot Concepts" by Nation's Restaurant News, Pie Five's fast-casual brand is experiencing a rapid growth. The little brother of The Colony-based Pizza Inn, Pie Five touts a revolutionary pizza-making experience built around a rather attractive five-minute bake time.
For around $7, hungry customers can choose from a list of standard specialty pizzas: one with a pile of various meat, one for veg-heads, one with buffalo chicken, one with olives and feta and one with pork and pickles (what the what?!). If you're craving something more custom, you can also choose from the "periodic table of pizza toppings" on the wall, making your 9-inch personal pie as unique as you are. A pie-tech will then crown you a creative genius and in just five short minutes, you are free to horf down your personal pie and burn the roof of your mouth in the process.
Pie Five will compete (somewhat) with Tulsa-based Top That, a concept also specializing in fast-casual, personal pizza that opened recently in Denton's ever-expanding Rayzor Ranch development. Methinks they shouldn't worry; there can never be to much pizza in this permahungry college town.
