The cluster of restaurants around the intersection of La Vista Drive and Skillman Street is about to get a new addition. A second Chip's Old Fashioned Hamburgers is slated to open there by the end of this summer.
If you've ever exited the Dallas North Tollway at Lovers Lane you've definitely seen the original Chip's. The green and yellow Tudor-style building got a fresh coat of paint about two years ago when Brent Gamster and his family purchased the restaurant. While Chip's location has moved in the past, the brand has been turning out burgers in Dallas for more than 30 years.
Gamster isn't new to the restaurant business. He's got a lifetime of experience working for the Cheesecake Factory and the Darden restaurant group, opening up restaurants all over the country. Now he's applying that experience to open up a second of what he hopes to be five or six restaurants around the DFW area.
"We lucked into a really good thing," said Gamster of purchasing Chip's. Employees with more than a decade of experience stayed when the restaurant changed hands and customers have remained loyal too.
Some of those long-timers will note the new East Dallas location is a bit of a homecoming for the burger restaurant. The original Chip's was located on Central Expressway at Forest Lane, but when the expressway was expanded that location was demolished. Chip's has been at the Lovers Lane location for the past 20 years.
