Each week, this blog will be highlighting a different restaurant happy hour food menu, keeping you informed of what deals there are out there. This week, we dine like the Greek gods and goddesses (but, on a budget) at Travis Walk's Ziziki's.
Where: Ziziki's Restaurant, 4514 Travis St. #122, Dallas, Texas, 75205 When: Monday-Friday, 4-6 p.m. The Scene: The beloved Greek bistro's happy hour is quiet, but it's like a calm before the dinner storm. The scene resembles the scramble backstage at a theater before the curtain goes up. Waiters setting tables, cooks prepping their stations, bartenders wiping glasses, and the manager rushing in with emergency groceries from the market. It's quite the show. The Deal: $5 appetizer items, such as dolmades, artichoke dip, and spanakopita. The Steals: $4 lollipop lamb chops were cooked well and immensely tasty. Order three and it's a sizable meal for $12. The Con: The "dress rehearsal" hustle before the dinner show can have its drawbacks. We were overcharged for our happy hour drinks and even after pointing it out were overcharged once again. Happy hour must not be very popular if the staff is unaware of its prices.
Eat: The spanakopita. The flaky filo dough, the creamy spinach, and the slightly tangy feta melded together very well, making this dish a stunner. Skip: We're nitpicking, but if we have to pick one thing to skip, it'd be the ziziki bread. For the same price, get the artichoke dip, instead. It's $4 more than the ziziki bread on the dinner menu. Lushworthy: $7 specialty drinks.
The bottom line: Ziziki's has been around for more than 15 years for a reason: It's food is good. One can get full on the happy hour appetizers and lamb chops, alone, but it would only whet the appetite for the encore.
