Who needs October in order to fest? This year's crop of Franconia Oktoberfestbeer ran through the filter yesterday and is loaded up on their environment-friendly trucks to head out on Thursday for the Katy Trail Ice House, where they'll tap this year's first wooden keg and give away free steins on Friday.

Though it's been awhile, if memory serves, Oktoberfestbeer is like eating a loaf of sweet liquid bread, in a good way -- though probably best balanced with a savory pork Schnitzel or vinegary kraut than Black Forest cake. It's bright red and creamy, with a prominently sweet caramel flavor, and weighs in at 5 percent ABV.

This year's brew has made a few stealth quality-control appearances around McKinney, and you can also find it during Saturday's tour. Find it in the coming months at The Old Monk, The Black Friar Pub, Allen Wickers, the Pub in McKinney, McKinney Oktoberfest on September 28-29 and Lake Highlands Oktoberfest on October 6.
