As a countdown to the Dallas Observer's "Best of Dallas" 2010, City of Ate is serving up 100 of the favorite dishes we crave, savor and hope to scarf down again soon. These dishes are in no particular order. Some are little known, others celebrated. Some are pricey, others can be eaten on the cheap, but all are delicious to the extreme. No. 24: Chopped Brisket Sliders At The Porch
Imagine an upscale, miniaturized version of the Sloppy Joe and you have some idea of what you're in for when you order chopped brisket sliders at The Porch. The appetizer is a symphony of contrasts -- crunchy and tender, sweet and savory, tangy and smooth. Served on soft dinner rolls just shy of Hawaiian sweet roll sweetness, with the interior sides grilled to prevent sogginess, the juicy, tender chopped meat is evenly coated with a sweet barbecue sauce, but not so laden as to let it dribble down your arm. It would have been fine just like that, but the crisp coleslaw and a thick slice of sweet, horseradish-spiked pickle puts it over the top. Our cheap-meat, Manwich-glazed Sloppy Joes seem feeble in comparison.
