Monday night's aren't usually hopping with musical performances. But there are a couple of things going tonight on that certainly warrant a bit of attention. Each of these events could help cure a bad case of the Mondays.
Col. Bruce Hampton and The Quark Alliance at Dan's Silverleaf
Bruce
Hampton (real name: Gustav Berglund III) has been playing blues, jazz,
psychedelic rock and various combinations of all three styles since
1963. Perhaps best known for helping start the 1990s seminal H.O.R.D.E.
tours, Hampton's musical output is decidedly hit or miss. If your
tastes lean towards the jammy (and hammy), Hampton's showmanship may be
just your thing. And, while whether Hampton is a real retired colonel remains up
for debate, the guy's taste in side players is beyond reproach: The
Quark Alliance, Hampton's most recent project features guitarist Kris
Dale and drummer Duane Trucks, guys with stellar pedigrees and
reputations. And Hampton did have a small role in the movie Sling Blade, and such a pop culture footnote ought to count for something.
Spooky Folk, Drew Andrews and the Special Cities and Baruch the Scribe at City Tavern
Nice
beefy bill at City Tavern, especially on a Monday night. Denton's
Spooky Folk has received lots of love from the us here at the Observer, and the
oddball sextet definitely deserves it. Drew Andrews hails out of San Diego and is probably best known
for his work with The Album Leaf and Via Satellite. Andrews' new EP,
Playing Birthday Games, will be released October 26, so tonight's a
nice chance to hear the new songs before they are all official. The
ambient drone and sampled technology of Denton's Baruch the Scribe opens
up tonight's proceedings in what will certainly be an entertaining (and
lengthy) evening of music.
The O's, Leg Sweeper, Spector 45, A.Dd+ at The Libertine
Pete already told you about this one, though.
