For a whopping quarter of a century now, Hoboken's Yo La Tengo has existed comfortably at or near the top of the indie rock heap, showcasing an ever-changing aesthetic that, at various times in the band's career, has seen the band touching on various psych-, garage-rock and shoegaze styles. In this week's dead tree edition of DC9, Observer scribe Chris Parker details as much, praising the band for having "cultivated an encyclopedic knowledge of moves and [boasting] the skills to execute any of them."
The band's upcoming, Saturday night performance at the Granada Theater should be extra special, though, as the band will be joined by up-and-coming Columbus, Ohio-based indie outfit Times New Viking, a group Parker praises as "abrasive yet warm, chaotic but crisp, sweet and sour."
So, yeah, we're pretty pumped about the show--and the fact that our friends at the Granada Theater have kindly passed along a couple pairs of tickets for us to pass out to a few lucky DC9 readers. Want one of the pairs? OK: Be among the first two readers to email me right now with the words "Tengo Times" in the subject line, and you'll be ushered into the theater at no cost, which, uh-huh, is as sweet a deal as there is, no? Anyway, good luck!
Update: Contest is over. Congrats to our winners!
